The Bugatti design uses multiple springs of varying length clamped together for the font wheels. I am thinking that a multilayer fiberglass composite would work well here. Fiberglass has more flexibility and would be a better choice over carbon fiber. It would have to be a trial and error deal to learn how many plies would be ideal. But I think it would not be too hard to come up with the right combination. The downside to this again is that I could not chrome it like I want. So for now the jury is still out.
The real Bugatti’s used rear spring suspension as well. From what I have read thus far it complicates the design. I did find one clever design that hinged the entire motor/axle support structure at the back side of the driver’s seat.
After Huntsville, I realized I needed more weight, not less weight up front. So I am now going back to a steel spring.
One very innovative solution I saw there was the use of a sawed-up snow ski for springs. The composite wood and metal ski purchased from Goodwill was very affordable and cleverly implemented into his design which used two sets for each wheel. When asked how well it worked he said he would let me know afterward. Regrettably, I did not visit him afterward.
