Chassis Frame

These pictures show original Bugatti chassis frames that are for sale at the time of this writing.  Incredibly, they are drop forged rather than built up from separate pieces of steel and welded together.

These Bugatti frames are quite different from the straight 1″ x 3″ steel tubes used in most cyclekart frames.  In trying to stay more true to the original shape and style while simultaneously making them lightweight and strong, I have decided to build these using carbon fiber composite.  This will be a big challenge as I am certifiably not a carbon fiber composites expert.  So I plan on building some two-foot test sections before building the real frames.

My chassis frame will need to meet the following criteria:

  1. Lightweight and very strong
  2. Preserve the shape and style of the original design
  3. Include lightening holes that give the Bugatti a lot of character (not shown in the pictures above)
  4. Deliver a smooth shiny finish on the outside and a peel-ply finish on interior sides to facilitate joining to other structural members without a lot of sanding

See my Builders Log to follow my progress.
